Contrasting Magazine Covers H/W (Miss Wigley)

The two magazine covers I have chosen to talk about are Nuts Magazine and Closer Magazine. These are two contrasting magazines. One is aimed at men and the other is aimed at women.

Closer magazine is aimed at women. We know this straight away by looking at the front cover. This is because they have pictures that would appeal to women such as people that are uncomfortable about their weight and the latest fashion. Closer magazine is gossip related. All stories on the front cover of Closer is gossip. This would appeal to women as they are interested in what is going on with celebrities and their life, whereas men would not be interested in other people’s life. The words on the front cover are in big bold letters and stories that would stand out to women. The images used are also very powerful in what the story is about. We know by the use of camera all the images on the front cover are taken on the sly. This tells us that it is gossip if we know the celebrity did not purposely take pictures of them being caught off guard. The colours used are pink. This is a very girly colour which would appeal to women. Also as said before all the captions on the front cover are all gossip which attract the target audience by “READ MORE INSIDE”.

This differs to Nuts Magazine. Whereas Closer magazine is all gossip which appeals to women this is pictures of women, cars and football which appeal to men. They have a big picture of a woman in just her underwear. This is a photo shoot picture which was taken especially for the magazine. This would appeal to men as they are interested in women which are half naked. This would appeal to woman if it were to be an underwear magazine, but as Nuts magazine is aimed to men they put up images that would appeal to them such as half naked women. They also have pictures of a car. This would also appeal to men rather than women coz women don’t usually care as much as men to as to what car they are driving. On the cover they have the price of a sports car which is cheap and which will get men to read the magazine. Also on the front cover they have Wayne Rooney in the corner. This would catch a male’s eye rather than a woman as they are generally more into football than women are. This tells me that the magazine will have gossip which men would want to know about such as football. On the front cover it is mainly about women and the words they use are this such as “topless pool party pictures” would interest men into buying the magazine. They also use bright colours such as Red which symbolises fire and hot; connoting that the women in the pictures are hot.

Nuts magazine and Closer are very similar in the sense both magazine covers have mostly women on the front cover. However, the way in which the women are portrayed in the pictures and also the caption with the image tell us whether it would be for men or women. E.g. Closer magazine has a picture of Jade Goody in a bikini, the caption is “I don’t care whether I’m fat” this tells us as the audience this would be for women as it is gossip on other peoples weight. Whereas on Nuts Magazine has a picture of a woman in a bikini the caption reads:”bulging bikini special!” this tells us that it is for men as they would want to see women popping out of their bikinis.

12B - Work for Monday 18 Oct - Period 1 and 2 (Miss Wigley)


The first advertisement that I am going to be talking about is Cinderella. This poster is targeted at children. We know this straight away as most cartoons are aimed at children with a few exceptions. Cinderella would be aimed mostly at girls; this is because the storyline is based on a princess. It does not have a certain ethnicity as all cultures are able to watch it. As it is aimed for children, they would be classed as E in social class. In Young and Rubicam’s theory they would be a mainstreamer. This is because they are young and want materialistic things.

The poster uses bright colours and cartoon to attract their target audience. This is because children would look at things that would pop out at them rather than using dull boring colours which wouldn’t appeal to them. It also does not have any writing on there, other than the title of the film and the makers. This is good for children as they may not be able to read and they are at the age where pictures appeal to them rather than writing.


The second advertisement I am going to be talking about is Mean Girls. This poster is targeted mainly at teenage girls. This is because it is a chick flick about high school life and would appeal mostly to teenage girls. This known by looking at the poster as it has 4 teenage girls all dressed in pink. You would know that this wouldn’t be for young boys. This also does not have a certain ethnicity to it as it can be for any. This would also be for people in Social Class E. Young and Rubicams would be aspirers who plan to be suceeders. This is because the film is based on aspirers and suceeders.

The poster uses the right colours and images on the poster to attract teenage girls. This is done by using 4 teenage girls and they are all dressed in pink. This would appeal to teenage girls and the facial expressions make the audience want to know more about the film. Also with this poster they don’t have much writing apart from the name of the film.



The final advertisement I am going to be talking about is Paranormal Activity. This poster is targeted at an older audience above 18. This is because it is a horror film which is not suitable for younger people. We know by looking at the poster it would not be targeted at children because it is very dark and dull, and the storyline is about a couple who move into a house which is haunted and they have weird stuff happen to them. This would not be suitable for people under the age of 18 hence the reason it has an age restriction. This film also does not have certain ethnicity for people to watch. This could be for any social class as some people in Social Class E are over 18. It would be aimed at people who enjoy horror films.

The way in which the poster attracts its target audience is that they use dull dark colours to show that it is a gloom film. The image is also of the couple with scared expressions on their face. This poster has writing as it is targeted to an older audience and they can read the ratings and certain connotations about the films.

ASA Banned Adverts (Miss Van Der Sanden)

The link above is the Red Bull Banned Advert.


The reason why it was banned because it is acting out the Nativity Play and is changing it. They added another Wise Man to the three and brought Gold, Frakensense, Murr and Red Bull. This is offensive because it is taking the mick towards Christians, because that is what they believe in.

The link above is the L'oreal advert that caused controversy.


The reason why it caused controversy is because Cheryl Cole used hair extensions in the advert. All veiwers knew this and thought that it was false advertisement as she was wearing hair extensions and they were trying to sell shampoo which will make your hair stronger and healthier. This advert was not banned but adjusted by having written in the advert "Styled with some natural hair extensions",

The advert is into 3 parts. The reason why it was banned is the first part the woman is stabbed in the back by a fork. This could cause controversy as people may disagree with the fact that a person being stabbed by a fork on TV is inappropriate. The last part of the advert causes the most controversy as the little kid is playing with a sex toy. This is a sensitive area as it involves children and sex toys.

Dominant and Alternative Ideology (Miss Wigley)




The film that i have chosen for dominant ideology is "Inception".
The film synopsis:

The way in which this film represents dominant ideology is because the main character is a white male. 
He is middle aged and physically able. This within itself represents dominant ideology.






The film that i have chosen for alternative ideology is "I cant think straight"
The film synopsis:

The way in which this shows alternative ideology because the film is about a young asian woman, who discovers that she is a lesbian. This also within itself represents alternative ideology.
