Kidulthood Trailer (Textual Analysis)

Media Forms:

What techniques does the trailer use to persuade its audience to see the film?

The techniques, which are used in this trailer, which persuade people to go and watch the film, is that they show the most interesting bits of the film which make people want to go and see the film more. They show the interesting bits which make the audience want to see more but without giving too much of the film away. An example of this in the trailer is they tell the audience that a character has committed suicide but not which one ore why. This would make the audience want to see more why.

Media Representation:

How is gender represented in this trailer?

In this trailer men are represented as superior. The way in which this is done is in many ways. Majority of the trailer is showing just male characters and showing each different ways in which they are superior. In one scene it says, “In her suicide not she mentions Sam” this tells us as the audience that they have power not necessarily good power but able to make someone commit suicide. They show many different characters of males and show their different mind frames and different ways in which they have power.

Media Audiences:

What target audience would be attracted to this film?

The target audience for this film is a younger audience teenagers the age from 16 – 21. This is because the main characters in the film are all young and the film is based in school. This would appeal to a younger audience as they would be the same as and be able to relate to the characters. Another way in which they can relate is their stereotypes of young people drinking, smoking, partying and violence. It is stereotyped that youths are like this.

Media Institutions:

What low budget values and characteristics can you indentify in this trailer?

There aren’t many low budget characteristics in which I can identify in this trailer the only ones that I can see t says: “S N H Y PRESENTS…” This is not a well-known institution so from that it would tell us that it is a low budget film. There aren’t many other characteristics that tell us that it is a low budget film.

Lynx Dry Advert (Textual Analysis)

Media Forms

How does the text follow the codes and conventions of an advert?

The codes and conventions that are used in this advert is the fact that they show the product right in the beginning. They also use dramatic music in which would appeal to its target audience.  Like most other adverts they show the products and the person who is using the product or the service is the audience in which the product is targeted at.

Representation

How re people and place represented in this advert?

The way in which people are represented in this advert is that women are superior and men and les dominant. The way in which this is done is because the man puts the on the Lynx dry and all of a sudden is dragged half way across the towns by two girls. The women are represented as sexual. This is because they are in the water and wearing not much clothing. The way that women are more superior is because they have the power of dragging a man across the city just to get him because he is wearing the product. We then see later in the advert that they are mermaids; this represents fantasy on the males behalf as mermaids are seen to be sexual creatures and a man would dream to be chased after by two mermaids.

Institution

What does this text tell us about the media institutions involved?

The institution for Lynx is Unilever, but from looking at the advert I would not have known from this that it is Unilever. This is because the advert does not show any representation of the institutions in the advert.

Audience

What techniques does the advert use to appeal to its target audience?

The target audience for this product is Men. The techniques that are used to appeal to its target audience, is that they represent women in a sexual way. This is a good technique to appeal to its target audience. The way in which this would appeal is because it shows when the man puts on Lynx it makes them irresistible from women. This would appeal to its audience, as they would think if they brought this product they would also be irresistible from women. They also use fantasy as they use mermaids.

T Mobile Advert (Textual Analysis)

Media Forms

What conventions of advertising are evident in this text?

The conventions that are used in this advert which are used in most adverts is that at the end they show the logo of T mobile, this shows that this is the product which they are promoting throughout the advert. They show people on their phones throughout the advert. However they do not use many conventions of an advert. This is because it is not clear which product or service that they are trying to sell to the audience until the end where they show the T mobile logo.  Although they show people on their phones throughout this would not tell us that they are trying to sell the T mobile service.

Representation

How is technology represented in this advert?

The way in which they represent technology is in a positive way. This is because the advert is about people who don’t know each other coming together in a train station. The way in which technology is represented in a positive way is that people are recording on their phones, calling people telling them about what they can see and texting. This shows that wherever you are you can communicate with the world through technology. This is a positive representation of technology as they are able to share the fun of life with friends and family wherever they are.

Institutions

What is communicated about the T mobile brand and the experience it offers?

From looking at the advert it shows that the network T mobile and the experience it offers brings people together. This is because the advert is showing people of different ethnicities, different lifestyles and people who don’t know each other at all coming together and all dancing in unison. This tells us that the network brings people together in harmony. The fact that it is also filmed in a train station tells us that it is reliable. This is because trains are majority of the time on time and reliable, because its in a train station tells us that it is reliable and on time with your life.  As they show people on their phones throughout also shows that there are different ways in which you can use the phone, which will be a better experience for the target audience.

Audience

What target audience is T mobile aiming to attract in this advertisement?

From looking at the advert this shows that they are appealing to a wide range of audiences. This is because there is many different types of people in the advert and showing all of them use their phones in different ways. The advert shows an old woman using her phone to ring people while they are dances, it shows young people using their phone to text and shows ethnic people using their phone to record. It also shows that they are appealing to a wide range of audiences because all the different people of different backgrounds, and ages coming together and dancing in unison. This shows that this is what the T mobile network does.

Hyundai Advert (Textual Analysis)

Media Forms

Which advertising techniques are being used?

Throughout the advert there are many advertising techniques being used. These are the codes and conventions of an advert. The ones that are being used in this advert are the fact that they show the product, which they are promoting throughout the advert; this is done in most adverts, as they want to show their target audience the product that they are advertising. During the advert they also show the different qualities of the car, which would appeal to its target audience. The way in which they have done this is by showing the speed of the car and how smooth the ride is. At the end of the advert, they also quote “Next Generation Hyundai”, by doing this, it tells the target audience that it’s easier to use and has new technology to go with the world as they are also improving with technology. This would appeal to its target audience.

Representation

How is gender represented in this advertisement?

Within the advert gender is represented as males being more dominant. This is because they have used a boy who is driving the car throughout. The way in which this represents males as being dominant is the way in which he is driving the car is shown as a stereotype as how a male would drive the car. He also is driving and stops and picks up a girl from the side of the road. This would also make males feel superior. This is because it would make men think that if they had the Hyundai they would appeal more to women and they would be more attracted to the man. This would make the car feel dreamy for men as they would have a nice car and they would also get a woman. This is also stereotyped to appeal to men, as all they think about is “cars and women”. This shows that the Hyundai is appealed more to men.

Institution

What is communicated about the Hyundai brand and the experience it offers?

From looking at the advert the way in which the brand and the experience it gives, is portrayed to be a dreamy experience. This is because they would show how the little boy to get up out of bed happy and go straight for the car keys with a smile on his face. This shows that any person to drive the car would be happy. The way that they show the car and the experience to be dreamy is that they show the little boy driving the car in the summer, windows down hair blowing in the wind and picking up a girl. This is stereotypically seen to be a dreamy experience. Another way in which they show the experience of the Hyundai to be dreamy is with the use of sound that is used. They have used a very chilled out “happy song”. This would also have an effect on the target audience as if they were to have a slow depressing song it would appeal much to its target audience.

Audience

Who is the target audience and how does the advert attempt to persuade the audience to buy the product?

The target audience for the Hyundai is men. The way in which the advert portrays this is by using a boy as the main person who is driving the car. The way that the advert is appealed to its target audience and persuades them to buy the car is by showing the car to have a dreamy experience and showing men to be superior. This is done by showing that men have full control when they are driving the car and they will look cool in front of other men. This is shown when there are people standing around waving at the by whilst he is driving. It is also shown that men have some sort of power, this is done when he picks up a girl from the side of the road. This would appeal to men, as they would think if they had that car they would be more attractive to women and they would have that power with the Hyundai.

Sun 4.0 Advert (Textual Analysis)

1. Media Forms: How does the advert use codes and conventions to appeal to its audience?
The way in which the advert uses codes and conventions to appeal to its audience is by showing the product. This helps appeal to its audience as they are trying to sell the products so that the target audience can see the products and the way in which it is used. There is a clear background and then just hands showing the products. Having a plain background helps appeal to its audience is because at the beginning of the advertisement all the viewer sees is a plain white background and then the Newspaper. The advertisement also uses a voiceover. This is also a good technique to use to appeal to its target audience as it tells the viewer about the product and the way in which it can be used. For example the voice over says at the beginning of the advert:”This is the Sun Newspaper. This is how you open it”. Everyone knows how to open a newspaper but by the narrator telling the viewer this is showing that they are trying to break down the Newspaper so simply so that it’s easy for everyone to have.  In the advertisement they do not show the price of the Newspaper but they just show one hand giving money to another, and explain to the customer that they get what they pay for. The hands show that they are giving 20p’s, so this tells the target audience that it doesn’t cost a lot of money as they are not using pound coins. On the front of the newspaper you would usually have the price of the newspaper however, in the advert it does no show the price. Most advertisements use a role play in their adverts however, this advertisement throughout the whole thing just shows a plain white background and all qualities of the magazine; sports, gossip, games, music and x factor. They also show a recycling sign at the end. This would appeal to its target audience as the whole world is worried about being green and if an institution is shown to be playing a part in reducing their carbon footprint, this would have a positive effect on its audience.

2. Representation: How is new technology represented in the advertisement?
In the advertisement technology is shown as a negative thing. Usually with Institutions all three platforms would promote each other, however this advert does not. They just show the Print which is the actual newspaper. The advert shows that technology which is Broadcast and E-media as a negative. This is done because in the advert as they are showing the qualities of the newspaper they say: “Sports spread on a wide page rather than squinting trying to look at sports on a small screen”. This is telling the viewer that if they were to look at the news on either Television or the Computer it would not be as clear and easy to look at than what it would on a newspaper. Also during the advertisement whilst they are telling the target audience about its features it shows the E-media as a negative thing; “Instead of waiting for a story to download”. This represents the E-media as a negative form of receiving news as you would have to wait for the computer to load whereas with the Newspaper it is all there without any hassle. They represent The Sun Newspaper’s technology to have improved; this is because they show the new ways in which they have printed the newspaper is better than what it used to be, using new technology. An example showing this is the images are in 3d high definition using better technology. Also Stories aren’t printed sideways; they would have used better technology actually making the newspaper to show that they are able to meet the needs of the customers. Overall in the advertisement they do not represent technology is a positive way because they are trying to promote the Newspaper which is print, and doesn’t involve using technology to enable people to hear about the news of the worlds.

3. Media Institutions: What does the advertisement tell you about the values and ideologies of the Sun Newspaper?
From looking at the advertisement and the way in which it is represented to the viewer it shows that the Sun Newspaper has dominant ideology. The reason I think this is because as the voiceover is showing all qualities of this newspaper majority of the contents in the newspaper appeal to men. In the advert it shows that it has 2 double page spreads of just sport, they show the music page which has a big picture of Rihanna wearing skimpy clothing; this related back to women being interpreted as sexual. This shows the dominant ideology. Throughout the whole advert no faces are shown just hands are used, and it is clear to see that all hands that are holding the newspaper are male hands, it does not show women hands. The Sun Newspaper on Page 3 also has a picture of a half naked woman, this is not shown in the advert as this specify that the newspaper is for men, showing dominant ideology and women as inferior and represented sexually.

4. Audience: How does the advertisement appeal to its audience?
The way in which the advertisement appeals to its target audience is by showing all the qualities. From looking at the advertisement this tells me that the target audience for the newspaper is males from the age of 15+, of social class E, D, C1 and C2. This is because the newspaper shows that it is about gossip, TV shows, football, music and women. People in these social classes are either students, unemployed, un-skilled working class. The reason it would appeal to them is because they would be less likely to want to read about business and the government. They would want to know about celebrity gossip, music and football. This would not be targeted at people in the Social class of A or B as they are the high working class; doctors and lawyers. A newspaper that would appeal to them would be The Guardian as this newspaper is about business and current affairs. The reason why this newspaper would appeal to men more than woman is because the contents of the newspaper which are shown in the advertisement, is shown to appeal more to men; football is more associated with men than what it is women and it is shown that the Newspaper has two double page spreads of sports. On the music page which is shown it shows a big picture of Rihanna wearing not a lot of clothing, this represents woman as sexual. This would appeal to a male. Throughout the whole advertisement it is just a plain white background, the newspaper and hands holding it. All the hands which are shown in the newspaper are all male hands. This shows that more men would read the newspaper as there are no women’s hands shown in the newspaper. Also which is not shown in the advertisement is that on Page 3 of the newspaper it has a half naked woman topless, this is targeted and men.

Kicks Analysis (Miss Wigley) Cover Work 1/11

The trailer “Kicks” starts up as a close up shot. This is of the main girl. We know this because throughout the trailer it is mainly focused on her. She is lying down stroking a picture of a famous footballer. The camera is at a straight on angle. The camera starts from above her and then tracks around to show her face. All that is in the beginning is her face, and the picture of the footballer. The trailer uses very affective sound. All that is heard when the trailer is opening is the girl singing. “Liverpool we love you”. This then slowly fades into music. As it starts to play music, the camera is just placed at a long shot from the girl and she is walking towards this. As it is a trailer all the scenes are every quick. After they have a long shot of the girl walking towards the camera they have a close up of her looking through the cracks in a wall. All that is seen in this shot is the wall and the crack that she is looking through. This is then linked into the next shot as all we can see in the next shot is Lee Cassidy with black shadow around him. This shows him as if we were looking at him through the cracks of the wall the way the girl was. During this and the next shots there is the same music playing throughout and then noises from the film which are relevant. These are things such as whistles blowing, cars crashing and his name being shouted. Through the shots they are linked with flashed writing explaining to us what she is doing in the scene either before or after and why. In the first couple of shots it shows just him. After this shot they then show us “Love”. By this being done we know that this is her love. Thereafter it shows “obsession”. The scene after this then shows her breaking into a car. This was a medium shot. You could see the car her and smashing it. There is then a close up of her feet and the glass falling to the ground. Also showing her obsession the next shot is a close up of her eye, which is teary and then her tattooing herself. This is a heart with Lee in the middle of it. This is a close up of the needle going into her skin. After this shot it then says “fate”. Once this shot of the word “fate” is up, the music changes into almost happier music. In these shots it shows how her fate changes and she meets someone who will get her closer to Lee Cassidy. Some of the shots that are used are close up ones of their faces and some long shots. One of the long shots used is from behind them. They are standing at the top of a hill where all is seen are the silhouettes and the sun setting. This connotes that the day is getting darker as well as the film. This is because generally if the day is dark, rainy and gloomy we know that something bad is more likely to happen rather than in broad daylight, sunshine. After this it carries on by the footballer and the girl meeting and still smiling. One of the shots used is a close up of Lee Cassidy rubbing the girls arm and her smiling. After this we know that the film is going to turn bad as the music changes back to dramatic and Nicole saying: “No, you can’t leave”. There is then a close up shot of Lee Cassidy with tears falling down his face and Nicole’s hand on him. The next shots are all gloom showing the obsession turning dangerous. One of the last shots used is a long shot of Nicole. In this shot you can see her holding a gun and Lee Cassidy tied to a chair. The music is still playing until Nicole shouts “STOP” and then the gun shots. During the trailer the word shots used were the same font as the title of the film “KICKS”. After the gun shots “Kicks” then appears. The ending then is the same as the beginning. A close up of Nicole’s hand dropping the gun. The sound that is used is the gun dropping and then the girl singing again; “Liverpool we love you”. The film is a trailer aimed at people above the age of 18.

Contrasting Magazine Covers H/W (Miss Wigley)

The two magazine covers I have chosen to talk about are Nuts Magazine and Closer Magazine. These are two contrasting magazines. One is aimed at men and the other is aimed at women.

Closer magazine is aimed at women. We know this straight away by looking at the front cover. This is because they have pictures that would appeal to women such as people that are uncomfortable about their weight and the latest fashion. Closer magazine is gossip related. All stories on the front cover of Closer is gossip. This would appeal to women as they are interested in what is going on with celebrities and their life, whereas men would not be interested in other people’s life. The words on the front cover are in big bold letters and stories that would stand out to women. The images used are also very powerful in what the story is about. We know by the use of camera all the images on the front cover are taken on the sly. This tells us that it is gossip if we know the celebrity did not purposely take pictures of them being caught off guard. The colours used are pink. This is a very girly colour which would appeal to women. Also as said before all the captions on the front cover are all gossip which attract the target audience by “READ MORE INSIDE”.

This differs to Nuts Magazine. Whereas Closer magazine is all gossip which appeals to women this is pictures of women, cars and football which appeal to men. They have a big picture of a woman in just her underwear. This is a photo shoot picture which was taken especially for the magazine. This would appeal to men as they are interested in women which are half naked. This would appeal to woman if it were to be an underwear magazine, but as Nuts magazine is aimed to men they put up images that would appeal to them such as half naked women. They also have pictures of a car. This would also appeal to men rather than women coz women don’t usually care as much as men to as to what car they are driving. On the cover they have the price of a sports car which is cheap and which will get men to read the magazine. Also on the front cover they have Wayne Rooney in the corner. This would catch a male’s eye rather than a woman as they are generally more into football than women are. This tells me that the magazine will have gossip which men would want to know about such as football. On the front cover it is mainly about women and the words they use are this such as “topless pool party pictures” would interest men into buying the magazine. They also use bright colours such as Red which symbolises fire and hot; connoting that the women in the pictures are hot.

Nuts magazine and Closer are very similar in the sense both magazine covers have mostly women on the front cover. However, the way in which the women are portrayed in the pictures and also the caption with the image tell us whether it would be for men or women. E.g. Closer magazine has a picture of Jade Goody in a bikini, the caption is “I don’t care whether I’m fat” this tells us as the audience this would be for women as it is gossip on other peoples weight. Whereas on Nuts Magazine has a picture of a woman in a bikini the caption reads:”bulging bikini special!” this tells us that it is for men as they would want to see women popping out of their bikinis.
